Dear Paul,
My sincere congratulations to you, your family and staff for a job well done for 18 years in publishing the Hellenic News of America. This, in spite of the many and difficult challenges that a bi-lingual Greek-American newspaper faces.
I can go into specifics and list many of the things that your effort, via the Hellenic News of America, has accomplished for our communities over the many years, but I will simply say thank you and congratulations. Allow me however, to concentrate on something that I believe we, as Hellenic Americans, we face and continues to be an obstacle for us. It is part of the overall challenge and opportunity for survival as an active and contributing Hellenic entity in the USA. Let me verbalize a bit below.
At times I hear general commentary that our communities are losing their Hellenic character and our best days have long past, something that really bothers me, even if there is truth to it. It is exactly on this point that your newspaper is and can continue to be helpful to all of us in the general region that we reside. The same applies for the Greek Spirit TV program that my other communications friend, George Burlotos, has had over the years. Effective and inspiring communication between communities and beyond is paramount to our continuity.
I often think of the older days that our communities, led by our churches with their respective councils, used to keep us energized as Greek-Americans in valuing and working to live by the high standards of our culture. They kept our spirits up to perpetuate our unmatched Hellenic heritage, both within our families and our communities. It is obvious to most people today that this part of the effort by our church-led communities has been highly diluted and has lower priority in their agendas. So, if we are to continue, who is going to provide the reason and the incentive for the desire to do so in a vibrant and energetic manner? Incentives for effective communications and quality programs are critical in my view. As implies above, the only two means of cross-community communication left in our region are The Hellenic News of America and the Greek Spirit TV program. I would like to see a concerted effort by all of us to make it possible for a really vibrant regional communication Center, using the newspaper, the TV, the radio, the computer and other means. The programs and the communications out of this endeavor will be feeding our minds and spirits by promoting Hellenic Paedeia and social interaction; and, of course, it will be feeding the financial engine of our communities by promoting Hellenic business.
My point here, Paul, is: Please continue your difficult task and I hope that all of us in the Tri-State region and beyond recognize the importance of your newspaper in our Greek cultural survival and support you accordingly.
I often find a Greek restaurant or other store from your advertisements that I make it a point to visit next time. This adds to my Greekness and my general well being. I trust many others share my view on this and recognize the importance of The Hellenic News of America in our future.
Finally, personally and on behalf of the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture (AFGLC) that I represent in the Tri-State region, I congratulate you for your continued promotion of Greek Paedeia (Education and Culture). Your recent series of articles on the AFGLC work that helped create the Hellenic Center at The Stockton College of New Jersey are greatly appreciated.
Again, thank you for your effort ! Allow me to close with the refresher expression of our Greek language used by Nancy Biska in her recent article, as we all know harmony and coordinated cooperation are essential ingredients to our success.
