John N. Kastanis, FACHE, has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Temple University Hospital (TUH), effective immediately. Kastanis has served as Interim CEO of Temple University Hospital since December 19, 2011.

As President and CEO, Kastanis will have responsibility for the strategic direction, operational effectiveness, and financial health of Temple University Hospital – including Temple Main, the Episcopal and Northeastern Campuses, the TUH Bone Marrow Transplant Program located at Jeanes Hospital, and the Temple Transport Team.

He will work closely with Health System, Hospital, and medical staff leadership to invest in medical services and technologies, grow market share, and continue the recruitment of top-notch physicians.

He will also work closely with the executive leadership teams of Temple's healthcare enterprise and the University to formulate Temple University Hospital's long-range goals and plans.

"As Temple University Hospital's Interim CEO, John has demonstrated the strength and effectiveness of his leadership, working closely with the physician and administrative leadership of TUH and Temple University Health System," said Verdi J. DiSesa, MD, MBA, Chief Operating Officer of Temple University Health System and Professor of Surgery & Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs at Temple University School of Medicine, in announcing the appointment. "He has begun the transformation of the hospital into a more cost-efficient provider to guide it toward long-term financial stability and to sustain the momentum of proactive strategies to enhance its core operations – including workforce productivity and efficiency, and enhancements in patient safety and satisfaction."

"John's extensive accomplishments here and as a seasoned hospital administrator in a wide range of healthcare settings, as well as his experience as a healthcare consultant to hospital boards, investment banking, and management firms, make him ideally suited to take on the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead for Temple University Hospital," added Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS, Dean and CEO of Temple's healthcare enterprise – which includes Temple University School of Medicine and Temple University Health System.

Kastanis is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), earned his MBA from Baruch College-Mt.
