ST. SOPHIA CHURCH INTERIOR PLAN REVEALED

Jeffersonville, PA - St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Jeffersonville, Pennsylvania continues to make extraordinary progress. Having met the goal of opening the doors of its new church for Thyranoixia on April 7 of this year, just in time for Holy Week and Pascha and with much of its iconography program already complete, the next phase of its interior plan was heralded at its annual feast day dinner dance on Saturday, October 6. The assembled throng marveled at the many renderings on display.

ALTARDean Laskaris, the chairman of the building committee announced that the world-class ecclesiastical wood carving studio of Stylianos (Evangelos) Kavroulakis of Hania, Crete had been commissioned to design the appointments that will complete the eastern (altar) facing end in the Nave of the new landmark byzantine edifice. The Kavroulakis renderings on display included;

the iconostasion or icon screen, altar, bishop’s throne, the analoyion or chanter’s stand, chanter’s stasidia and amvon or pulpit. Each of the items will be hand carved from the finest white oak. The work is so detailed and painstaking that it will take nearly eight months to complete. The designs are reflective of the Church’s authentic byzantine style and the iconostasion in particular was designed to be in harmony with the architecture and the iconography that has been completed thus far by the world-acclaimed iconographer, Dr. George Kordis. It is Kordis himself that will paint the icons that will adorn the iconostasion.BISHOPs THRONE

The chairman indicated that "each item in the interior plan represents an enduring permanent sponsorship opportunity for anyone who would like to donate towards the decoration of the church in honor of or to memorialize a loved one." It is hoped that upon final approval of the plans and completion of fund raising, that delivery of the aforementioned ecclesiastical artifacts could come by fall 2013.

Finally, the church’s Pastor, The Reverend Economos, Fr. Peter Thornberg expressed his appreciation to the celebrants and offered his "Thanks to all who contributed to make the long-awaited dream an amazing reality for this parish".  The church of St. Sophia is located at 900 S. Trooper Road, Jeffersonville, PA 19403, for more information or to make a donation please call the parish office at 610-650-8960 or log onto www.stsophiavf.org.
