Open letter of Hellenic News of America to his

Excellency the Premier of the Hellenic Government, Mr. Antonis Samaras

Dear Prime Minister Samaras:

I seize the opportunity, as the founder and editor of a historic newspaper for our Omogeneia that is published in the United States, to communicate with you not only to relay personally my agony for the events in our country of origin, but more importantly to convey to you views of our readers regarding the various issues of the millions of Hellenes in the Diaspora, concerning voting of the Omogeneia, the lack of a permanent taxation system that will drive investments, the double taxation system (Everyone should pay the fare share) and many others of which you are familiar.

Under no circumstance do I wish for the position of our newspaper to be considered as pressure upon your government, to do something contrary to your volition and your democratic sensitivities.

USCIRF issues statement on Hagia Sophia

Washington D.C. - The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) finds misguided a recent bill introduced in Turkey's parliament that would change the status of the historic Hagia Sophia in Istanbul from a museum to a mosque. USCIRF urges Prime Minister Erdogan publicly to reject the bill and affirm that Hagia Sophia's current status will be maintained.

Built in the sixth century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, Hagia Sophia served for nearly 1000 years as the most visible symbol of the Christian faith within the Byzantine Empire. Following the 1453 Muslim conquest of Constantinople, Istanbul's former name, this magnificent structure was converted to a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. For nearly 500 years it was a similarly potent symbol of the Muslim faith within the Ottoman Empire before becoming a museum in 1935.
