Dear Paul,

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Hellenic News of America, I would like to congratulate you and your distinguished team for this great success of the newspaper, and to wish you and your family health and vitality to continue on this road of success for the next 25 years and beyond. The Hellenic Diaspora in America and globally should be proud to have people like you in its ranks.

The service which you have provided to Greek American Community over the years is invaluable indeed and should be recognized by the Hellenic State for what it is, a national service to the ideal of the preservation of the perennial values of Hellenism in America. The bilingual format of the paper is a distinct characteristic that should be retained and encouraged for it keeps the Greek Community, especially the younger generations, connected with their roots.

With best wishes for this joyous occasion.

Yours truely,

Christos C. Evangeliou

New York, NY

The Greek government’s policy on Greeks Abroad was one of the main issues discussed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Konstantinos Tsiaras during his visit in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and New York. In the last three Mr. Tsiaras accompanied the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Dimitri Avramopoulos.

During a Press Conference at the Greek consulate in New York, Mr. Tsiaras expressed how important it is to build a bridge of constant communication between Greek Abroad and Greece as well as rebuild the relationship between the Greek state and the various Greek-American organizations.

A Discussion On

“Hellenism in the Public Service”

Hellenism in the Public Service is embodied in the many and diverse ways that Greek-Americans are giving back to the broader society. It can be thought of expansively to include not just service in the public sector, but volunteerism that ranges from a school fundraising drive to the service of a successful business entrepreneur on the board of a local hospital or museum. It is a wonderful expression of our proud heritage that Greek-Americans choose every day to contribute to the communities in which we live and work.

THE SPIRIT OF 1776 & 1821:

THE LEGACY OF OUR GREEK AMERICAN HERITAGE

Dean C. Lomis, Ph.D.

For those born in Hellas, the land of our forefathers, March 25, 1821 has special significance. For those of us born of Hellenic ancestry in this great nation of ours, March 25, 1821 has special significance. For those not of Hellenic extraction but born in this Hellenistic-land-in- structure-and-in-spirit, March 25, 1821 has special significance. This common significance is the legacy of the birth of democracy and the development of the “age of reason” two thousand years ago, to the birth of a country of democracy and the development of the “empire of reason” just 200 years ago. Furthermore, the creation of this empire of reason was won through a war of independence, while the land of the birth of democracy won its rebirth similarly through a war of independence whose 192nd anniversary we celebrate solemnly this month. As then-President Ronald Reagan stated in 1987, signing into law March 25 as an American day of observance, it was to acknowledge “our country’s debt to Greece.”

HANC CELEBRATES GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY

HANC CELEBRATES GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY

The Hellenic American National Council (HANC) joins all the other Greek organizations in the United States and the Greek Diaspora in the Celebration of the 192nd Greek Independence Day.

The Greek struggle for independence against the Ottoman yoke was long, painful and destructive. A tremendous price was paid in human loss and material destruction. Most of the liberated area was living in misery, poverty and pain. All the ravages of war, however, did not stop the creativity, industriousness and ingenuity of the Greek people. Despite the many adversities they soon moved to a higher level in the political and economic ladder. In a few decades not only they surpassed in economic and other standards their former masters, but were also able to use their newfound power to expand their territory, first through the annexation of Thessaly (1881) and then through the victorious Balkan Wars of 1912-13.

The Armenians: Unsung Supporter of Hellenism

By Catherine Tsounis

“The Armenians are our brothers,” said Mr. Constantine Parthenis my Modern Greek instructor at St. Demetrios Greek American School in 1950’s Astoria, New York. Dr. Emory, a medieval historian at Queens College, explained in a 1969 undergraduate class that “the Armenians are not recognized significantly in the Byzantine Empire.” Throughout the years of research and readings of the former Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and current Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Armenian contribution to Hellenism is not explored.
