PART ONE: Alexander Karas' questions to Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren

QUESTION: Ambassador Oren, as you know, Israel recently completed the sale of electronic warfare systems to Turkey despite ongoing strained relationships between Greece and Turkey, Cyprus and Turkey and Israel and Turkey worth 200 million dollars. The Turks feel drilling for oil in the region is National Security Concern ,,,how is it that with $700 million dollars earmarked for security of this pipeline $200 million go into what seems to undermine its security solely based on past behaviors of the Turks with daily dogfights between Greek and Turkish Air forces and ongoing violations against humanity without compliance of same?

The Passing of the Dean of the Greek-American Community and the Greek Diaspora

Andrew Athens - and a picture of him serving the US Army in World War II - in October, 2011 when he was honored in Washington DC, along with Senator Bob Dole, with the Greatest Generation Award.

WASHINGTON, DC., March 14, 2013 -- Andrew A. Athens passed away in his sleep early this morning at his home in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 91.

In addition to his extraordinary success as a major steel industry magnate of the mid-western United States, as Chairman of Metron Steel, and as the cherished head of a close and loving family -- made up of his wife of 67 years, Louise, son Paul (and his wife Kellee) and daughter Jacqueline (and her husband Alex) and their four grandchildren (Andrew (and wife Lanci), Alexa, James Paul, and Matthew) -- Andy epitomized what is best about Hellenism and Orthodoxy.

Virtually all who knew Andy found his intelligence, sincerity, charm and dedication to his family, his heritage and his country unsurpassed. Without exaggeration, Andy Athens' accomplishments for Hellenism and Orthodoxy are incomparable.

THE SPIRIT OF 1776 & 1821:

THE LEGACY OF OUR GREEK AMERICAN HERITAGE

Dean C. Lomis, Ph.D.

For those born in Hellas, the land of our forefathers, March 25, 1821 has special significance. For those of us born of Hellenic ancestry in this great nation of ours, March 25, 1821 has special significance. For those not of Hellenic extraction but born in this Hellenistic-land-in- structure-and-in-spirit, March 25, 1821 has special significance. This common significance is the legacy of the birth of democracy and the development of the “age of reason” two thousand years ago, to the birth of a country of democracy and the development of the “empire of reason” just 200 years ago. Furthermore, the creation of this empire of reason was won through a war of independence, while the land of the birth of democracy won its rebirth similarly through a war of independence whose 192nd anniversary we celebrate solemnly this month. As then-President Ronald Reagan stated in 1987, signing into law March 25 as an American day of observance, it was to acknowledge “our country’s debt to Greece.”
