Innovation, the Key to Prosperity Book Review – By Jerry H. Bloom, Staff Writer
Hellenic News of America and Hionis Hotels Hosted the Honorable Aris Melissaratos on May 30, in The Alexander Ballroom of the Best Western Concordville Hotel & Conference Center, in Concordville, PA for his first book signing for his newly published book: Innovation, the Key to Prosperity (Montagu House USA).
Melissaratos is founder of The Aris Institute, and Senior Advisor for Technology Enterprise Development to the President of Johns Hopkins University. He served as Secretary of Business and Economic Development for the State of Maryland from 2003 to 2007. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 32 years, retiring as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President for Science and Technology, responsible for research and development. Before that he was Chief Operations Officer for the company's Defense Electronics Group, responsible for $3.2 billion in sales. He also founded Armel Scientifics, LLC that invested in over 30 startup companies in the field of advanced technology.
Peter N. Yiannos, PhD of Wilmington, Delaware wrote … “I¢m delighted to report that we have found a Great Hellene at the recent book signing event, sponsored by Alex and Dora Hionis at the Concordville Inn, under the auspices of the Hellenic News of America.
Mr. Aris Melissaratos, a very accomplished business technologist, just published the book Innovation, the Key to Prosperity (Montagu House USA) co-authored with N.J. Slabbert. (Melissaratos) has grasped what has happened to America and has sensible and concrete ideas about what we must do as a nation to re-earn US leadership in innovation and business. The setting in this book is global, but the leadership and hegemony has to be American.
Melissaratos¢ vision will provide sufficiency in energy, new modes of transportation, cleaner environment, superb Paedeia, will liberate the nation from being captive to the Middle East for energy supply, and many other good ideas.
The book is superb and I recommend it highly. Thank you to you (Paul Kotrotsios) and the entire Alexander Hionis family for sponsoring the book signing event and bringing this treasure to our attention.
Some comments from Aris Melissaratos, as he spoke to the guests invited to his book signing event on May 30, 2009:
“I have always admired you (Paul Kotrotsios, Publisher Hellenic News of America) as the ultimate networker and connector of people and businesses not only among Greek-Americans but also all the other ethnicities that make up this amazing American cultural mosaic. The Hermes Expos that I¢ve attended for the last four years are a testament to your ability to pull people together and to forge lasting and meaningful connections.”
“However, the make-up of the audience that you and the Hionis family assembled for my recent book signing was simply magnificent. The high numbers of professionals; doctors, lawyers, businessmen, as well as the diversity of ages were very impressive and exceeded all of my expectations.”
“(My) book is about technology, technologies role in the country and civilization. I¢m a firm believer that technology creates balance.
“We are the world¢s remaining Superpower and are finding how fickle that power is. Therefore, in the future, our power will not come from the gun or the stock market. Our power will come from the fact that we have the best value system in the world.”
“We can raise our heads with pride and say that this is the best country in the world. We have the best of the best here. People believe that, as much as they disrespect us for our actions over the last decade or so, as much as they don¢t give us our due, everybody from all over the planet wants to come here! They want to come here to get educated, to work, to start families. So people vote with their feet.”
“So that¢s what the book¢s about: a little bit of history and a little bit of opinion. We offer ten suggestions that this administration and those that follow it, can use to go forward because you cannot create a strategy formation that changes every four years. You need to have a national commitment to build infrastructure that is robust; to bring up new generations of kids better than the previous one.”
“I firmly believe that in a few months from now, six, eight months, nine months, after the commercial real estate crisis is settled, after the banking and credit card crises is settled and as credit frees up, we will have a period of new industries and new products. A lot of promise lies ahead.”
Aris Melissaratos¢ “Ten Points to return America to the Technology Standard” as listed in his book are:
• Restore the U.S.¢s global intellectual leadership.
• Create a new era of innovation-based economic partnerships between
government and non-governmental entities.
• Invest more money in research and development.
• Service the global marketplace.
• Improve U.S. education and respect for basic science – and start by
convincing the public why this must be done.
• Focus on rebuilding a new American Infrastructure, rather than on just
rebuilding the old one.
• Introduce a national smart (power) grid.
• Go nuclear while simultaneously launching a determined national effort
to create a new alternative energy industry.
• Commit to a radically new national mass transit system.
• Create a government-led new national culture of technological
Innovation.
Peter N. Yiannos, PhD of Wilmington, Delaware ended his Letter to the Editor of the Hellenic New of America with this statement:
“The author¢s summarized autobiography, his Hellenic roots and education, are part of the book as well; they add to the interest in reading the book.
Melissaratos is a Great Hellene and a Great American. I sincerely hope that President Obama and Vice President Biden will soon tap him for a National leadership position; to help the nation rise from the ashes like a Hellenic Phoenix.” Print Article Email to a friend
