New Book Details How the U.S. Economy Can Recover New Book Details How the U.S. Economy Can Recover
Through Technology
Baltimore, MD – Former Maryland Business and Economic Development Secretary, Aris Melissaratos, has co-authored a new book with technology writer N.J. Slabbert that calls for the U.S. to take a bold lead and re-establish its role as a technological leader.
Innovation: The Key to Prosperity: Technology & America¢s Role in the 21st Century Global Economy, urges government to utilize an integrated approach to environmental management and climate change, as well as create a coast-to-coast national magnetic levitation mass transit system, launch a national commitment to nuclear power, and make the U.S. a global showcase of state-of-the-art technology in every leading-edge field.
The authors believe they have correctly diagnosed the shortcomings in America¢s attitudes and policies regarding science and technology. “There have been strong anti-innovation currents in America for a long time,” contends Melissaratos, saying they come from “conservative interests wishing to protect vested interests in obsolete technology and from leftists out to demonize science and technology.”
Slabbert describes the book in part as a “kind of intellectual detective story about how things went so wrong in America, with so much promise turning to economic, environmental and energy resource disaster…We tried to explain why in the 21st century the President of the United States has to understand how nanotechnology relates to the knowledge of the economy, and how magnetic levitation, biotechnology, the Internet and physics are intertwined and how they all relate urgently to government policy.”
The book includes a survey of how technology created modern America; an examination of how the U.S. “lost its technological nerve” around the 1960s; a diagnosis of America¢s current economic woes as a result of lost technological ground; and a call to re-establish America as the world¢s premier technological and scientific force with recommended steps on how to achieve this goal.
Melissaratos, founder of Armel Scientifics, LLC and The Aris InstituteTM, was recently honored as the Baltimore Museum of Industry¢s 2009 Industrialist of the year, as well as Ernst & Young¢s 2009 Supporter of Entrepreneurship. Currently affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, he worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 32 years, retiring as chief technology officer and vice president for science and technology, responsible for research and development.
Slabbert, a former Reader¢s Digest senior editor and staff writer, has another book coming out later this year entitled, Rescue Mission: How U.S. Military Research & Technology Can Help Save Our Economy.
This incisive diagnosis of America¢s economic meltdown avoids scholarly jargon and was written not only for policymakers and business leaders, but for “anyone who is wondering why America is in its current mess, and how it can get out of it.
