Sestak Stresses Democratic Values in Chester County

Sestak Stresses Democratic Values in Chester County
Addresses Local Democrats at Annual Fall Dinner

MEDIA, PA - Addressing about 200 attendees at the Chester County Democrats Fall Dinner at the Inn at Chester Springs, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Congressman Joe Sestak spoke about his reasons for believing strongly in his party's principles. He referred to the lessons of his 31 year Navy career, during he which he saw the benefits of investing in people by providing them with the economic, health and educational opportunties they needed to make the most of their talents.

Pictured with Congressman Sestak are Bill George, President of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and Dave McLimans, President of the Chester County Central Labor Council.

"The military isn't ideological, it's pragmatic," said Sestak. "So am I -- and these days that puts anyone squarely in the Democratic camp. It's only pragmatic to argue that tax breaks for the richest aren't best for the whole, that Wall Street shouldn't referee its own game, and that when our economy is sinking it's not enough to bail out the boat without patching the hole.

"In the Navy, my job was to protect the life and liberty of the American people. In Congress, my job is exactly the same. We'll go to any lengths to protect Americans from foreign threats -- why should it be of less concern when many suffer and even die from a broken health care system or a polluted environment? The military protects American commerce and investment around the globe -- why should we lack basic safeguards at home to prevent reckless investors from gambling away the retirement savings of hardworking people? I don't think we do well to distinguish injustices as acceptable or unacceptable. That makes me a Democrat."

Joe has emphasized the importance of two legislative efforts -- energy and health care -- to restore opportunities for all Americans by approaching the issues in a morally and economically beneficial way. The climate change bill he helped pass in the House would curb global warming and be an engine for job growth as well as American innovation in green energy, creating about 1.7 million jobs -- 71,500 here in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, ensuring health care for everyone will save billions of dollars annually in what is now lost productivity, while the public option Joe worked to help pass in the bill voted out of his Education and Labor Committee would offer the necessary competition to the insurance industry to lower costs.

Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 after a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, and he is honored to represent the Southeastern Pennsylvania district where he was born and raised. He is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania. During his Navy career, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral, served in the White House as Director for Defense Policy on President Clinton's National Security Council, served in the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of operational commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors/marines/ aviators/SEALs) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our nation's time of crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to serve as the first Director of "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks. Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a Master's in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. Joe lives in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his parents and six of his siblings still reside.
