GREEK ORTHODOX PARISH IN HUNTERDON COUNTY, NEW JERSEYCELEBRATES PURCHASE OF PROPERTY

GREEK ORTHODOX PARISH IN HUNTERDON COUNTY, NEW JERSEYCELEBRATES PURCHASE OF PROPERTY

On October 14, 2009, the Greek Orthodox Parish of Hunterdon County, New Jersey celebrated the purchase of a 12 acre property in Raritan Township on which to build the parish's church and community center. The Very Reverend Archimandrite George Nikas, interim pastor of the Greek Orthodox Parish of Hunterdon County and Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey commented, "The purchase of this property has been a journey of faith and our prayers have been answered. We now look forward to building our church and community center as this will serve to strengthen our Orthodox faith as well as educate our young people in our faith and Hellenic heritage. Our future home will ensure the presence of Orthodoxy in Hunterdon County, New Jersey for many generations to come as well as serve as a safe haven for our young people to attend cultural, sports and social events in a safe and family-oriented environment.”

In June of this year, the township's planning board approved the two phase site plan for the church complex to include multi-functional spaces in which to conduct religious, educational, social and recreational activities. The first phase will include construction of a church with seating for approximately 200, administrative offices, classrooms for the Greek language school and Sunday School, and a community hall. The hall will be used for social gatherings and will have the ability to convert to a basketball or volleyball court for recreational purposes. The second phase will include construction of a larger, approximately 300 seat church with a dome which is indicative of Byzantine architecture and converting the first phase church into a chapel and into more educational spaces. The architect, Christ Kamages, of CJK Group of California, commented, “Wherever we build Orthodox Churches in America, they become instant landmarks and conversation pieces, places of inspiration, awe and welcome.”

Formed in 2002, with about a dozen or so families and the support of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey, the young parish has blossomed into a vibrant, dynamic community. The pioneering families who have joined over the years, not only share their faith, but also the goal of building a Greek Orthodox Church in the Flemington, New Jersey area. (In the past, local faithful had to travel about an hour to reach the nearest Greek Orthodox churches in either Piscataway, Trenton or Westfield, New Jersey and in Pennsylvania). Currently, the Greek Orthodox Parish of Hunterdon County has about 100 steward families and this number is projected to grow in future years as Hunterdon County continues to grow and more families from the surrounding areas join the parish. Since 2006, through a gesture of kindness and Christian fellowship, the parish has been holding weekly services at The Allerton United Methodist Church in Annandale, New Jersey. (Orthros begins at 8:00 am and the Divine Liturgy at 9:00 am.). The parish offers a full-range of spiritual, educational and cultural programs.

Members of the parish invite all who wish to show their support to join in celebration at the annual dinner dance, "Another Step Closer to Achieving Our Dream" on Saturday, November, 14, 2009 from 6:30-11:00 PM at Razberry's Banquet Center located at 834 State Route 12, Kingwood, New Jersey. Tickets are $65 per person and reservations can be made via email at GOPHC_Dance09@yahoo.com. In addition to dinner and dancing, there will also be a Pre-Holiday Raffle with first prize of a $1,000 Visa Gift Card; 2nd prize of a GPS Navigational System (value: $400), and 3rd prize an Amazon Kindle (value: $300).
