Joe Sestak Visits Local Churches to Discuss Community Service Joe Sestak Visits Local Churches to Discuss Community Service
Discusses His Pennsylvania Values in Philadelphia and Montgomery County
MEDIA, PA - In his continuing effort to address important issues with congregations at various places of worship throughout Pennsylvania, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Congressman Joe Sestak joined hundreds of congregants in Spring House at Bethlehem Baptist Church and in Philadelphia at Zion AME Church. Following the service, the Congressman discussed the many ways that we can all contribute to our community, and then took questions from congregants.
"A good public servant is like a church pastor in that both understand their duty to helping people in our communities." Joe said. "Let us not forget the American spirit of service -- in uniform or in shirtsleeves, in foreign lands or in our neighborhoods. Hope is the architect of change, it's not the mason. The heavy lifting falls to us. We must answer the call of service, and encourage others to take part."
Reverend Charles Quann, the Senior Pastor, introduced Joe to speak at Bethlehem Baptist, which is 120 years old and reaches thousands of people throughout the Philadelphia and Montgomery County area. Rev. Quann is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award.
Following services at Bethlehem Baptist Joe joined former Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode at the Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church. Reverend Dr. Simon Bouie, who introduced Joe, is a community activist who is deeply involved in Philadelphia. He holds several key positions in various organizations, including PUSH and the YMCA. He has also served as the chairman of the NAVE Project in Harlem, New York, a forty-million-dollar project for creating affordable housing, and is a life member of the NAACP.
"I'm just so blessed to join your congregation," Joe added. "As I travel throughout Pennsylvania's 67 counties, and meet congregations of all faiths, I am inspired by the number of people dedicated to giving back through community service. Many of you prove that real change starts with our local leaders -- elected or otherwise -- who believe as I do that everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed based on one's God-given talents. As the son of a schoolteacher and Navy captain, who immigrated here with his father, I've seen what happens when families have a chance to pass on a better life to the next generation."
Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 after a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, and he is honored to represent the Southeastern Pennsylvania district where he was born and raised. He is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania. During his Navy career, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral, served in the White House as Director for Defense Policy on President Clinton's National Security Council, served in the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of operational commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors/marines/ aviators/SEALs) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our nation's time of crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to serve as the first Director of "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks. Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a Master's in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. Joe lives in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his parents and six of his siblings still reside.
