Joe Sestak Addresses NAACP State Conference Joe Sestak Addresses NAACP State Conference
Speaks about Ensuring Equal Opportunity for all Americans
MEDIA, PA - Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Congressman Joe Sestak was a featured guest at the State Conference Luncheon for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where he discussed a wide-range of issues with the more than 200 organization members. The question and answer session followed remarks about the values upon which he is running his Senate campaign.
"My mother was a schoolteacher and my father was a Navy captain, who immigrated to this country with his father, who was a steelworker," said Joe. "They ensured that my seven siblings and I had the opportunity to go to and graduate from college. I grew up seeing what happens when families have the opportunity to succeed based on their own hard work and talents. We must restore this opportunity and ensure that parents are able to pass on to their children a better life and a better country than the one they inherited.
"At every step of my life, from growing up and the Naval Academy to my military career and as a Member of Congress, I've been seen that individual achievement cannot be measured apart from the common good. Our society gives everyone the opportunity to contribute, and succeeds only if they do. It is our source of our greatness that we recognize the potential in everyone, and meet that potential with the tools, incentive, and opportunity to succeed."
Joe, who was introduced by Philadelphia NAACP President and Philadelphia Sun publisher Jerry Mondesire (pictured speaking with the Congressman in the attached photo), mentioned small business as one example of an area in which we can better provide equal opportunities for all Americans to succeed. Legislation he introduced this month would create programs to better prepare minority students to become successful entrepreneurs and ensure appropriate assistance is available to minority-owned start-up companies.
"The average gross receipts for minority-owned businesses have been well below the average for all companies," said Joe. "The lower numbers are not the result of less-talented individuals, but are, in significant part, due to a lack of educational opportunities and the impact of federal programs diverting funding away from new businesses. A change is needed from our past approach."
Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 after a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, and he is honored to represent the Southeastern Pennsylvania district where he was born and raised. He is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania. During his Navy career, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral, served in the White House as Director for Defense Policy on President Clinton's National Security Council, served in the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of operational commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors/marines/aviators/SEALs) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our nation's time of crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to serve as the first Director of "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks. Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a Master's in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. Joe lives in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his parents and six of his siblings still reside.
