Two Philanthropic Leaders to be Recognized at Delaware County Community Foundation Annual Meeting Two Philanthropic Leaders to be Recognized at Delaware County Community Foundation Annual Meeting
There¢s still time to register for the Delaware County Community Foundation¢s 2009 Celebration of Philanthropy on Tuesday evening, Nov. 10, where two of the most philanthropic families in America will be recognized for their contributions to Delaware County.
John C. Haas, noted area philanthropist whose family directs The William Penn Foundation, and Doris Buffett, sister of financier Warren Buffett, who is using Delaware County to test a pilot program for a national charitable initiative, will be among the area dignitaries to be recognized.
The event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Springfield Country Club, 400 W. Sproul Road in Springfield, Delaware County, with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by the program at 6 p.m. Over 200 area civic leaders are expected to attend to celebrate people who are making a difference close to home, said Peg Hendricks, DCCF Executive Director.
Other recipients of awards will be Main Line Today magazine and the 19 Rotary Clubs of Delaware County.
Tickets for the Celebration of Philanthropy are $45 per person. To register, visit the DCCF website at www.delcocf.org or e-mail Hendricks at peg.hendricks@comcast.net.
“We are extremely proud to be able to recognize two of the most philanthropic families in America at this gathering, and in particular to celebrate what they are doing to address critical community needs in Delaware County. Their contributions have made, and are continuing to make, Delaware County a singularly beautiful and civic-minded place to live and work,” said Hendricks.
Haas has been a lifelong champion of community service and of philanthropy, both on behalf of Rohm and Haas and as an individual citizen. A native of Haverford, he earned an A.B. in chemistry from Amherst College and a master¢s degree in chemical engineering from M.I.T. Following his discharge from the Navy, he began working at Rohm and Haas plants in Philadelphia, Knoxville, and Houston, where he met his wife, Chara. He was named executive vice president in 1962 and served as chairman of the board from 1974 – 1978. He has sat on the boards of many civic, cultural, educational, and charitable organizations, and the Haas family directs The William Penn Foundation, instrumental in advancing Greater Philadelphia as a vital, just, and caring community.
Buffett is founder and chair of The Sunshine Lady Foundation, Inc., through which she has given over $50 million since 1996. The Foundation reflects the Midwestern values and practical approach that Doris grew up with in Omaha, Neb. She chose DCCF in a pilot program to administer Sunshine grants – one-time humanitarian grants given to individuals and families experiencing serious short-term financial, domestic, health or employment problems, thereby enabling the family to experience longer-term solutions. The Delco Sunshine Fund has already awarded over 35 grants totaling $125,000, and DCCF is in the midst of a campaign to raise an additional $100,000 from the community by Dec. 31 in order to receive matching funds from Buffett.
“John Haas and Doris Buffett are both passionate about their responsibilities as philanthropists and good citizens, with boundless energy and enthusiasm for the community. They share inspirational family histories of philanthropy, integrity and generosity, and we are extremely proud to be able to recognize them for their good deeds in Delaware County,” said Hendricks.
