Protecting our Environment and Producing Clean, Domestic Energy Sestak v Specter IV
Protecting our Environment and Producing Clean, Domestic Energy
In an interview with the Pottstown Mercury last week, long-time Republican Senator Arlen Specter demonstrated the cavalier approach that he and his GOP leadership over the past 30 years have taken to our environment and that has lead to serious environmental concerns threaten Pennsylvania and our children. When asked about the potential pollution from drilling the Marcellus Shale, rather than offer a solution or policy position, he "defers" to the Department of Environmental "Resources." (It has been the Department of Environmental Protection for the last 15 years.) When the reporter asks if he means the same Pennsylvania department that just had it's budget slashed by 25 percent, Specter simply replies, "Yep,"... again, with absolutely no position on a growing environmental challenge.
There is, in fact, something Congress can do about the increasing wastewater from oil and gas wells that are contaminating drinking and bathing water across Pennsylvania. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Joe Sestak has co-sponsored and called for swift passage of a bill to limit these hydraulic fracturing operations from dumping liquid waste near drinking water and to require oil and gas companies to disclose the chemicals they use. Similar legislation exists in the Senate, but Arlen Specter refuses to sign on and reverse Bush-era rules that give special exemptions to these companies.
It is no surprise that the League of Conservation Voters gives Joe Sestak a 97 percent lifetime score in contrast to Arlen Specter's 48 percent. Joe has fought to:
* limit greenhouse gases,
* increase vehicle gas mileage, and
* incentivize investments in alternative energy.
When it mattered most, Arlen stood with Bush Republicans and against helping stem pollution that harms our citizens -- and he still has not changed. As the Senator who once introduced climate change legislation that the National Wildlife Federation said would "halt innovation in new energy technologies," Arlen:
* opposed landmark legislation to limit greenhouse gases,
* voted to terminate fuel economy standards, and
* rejected tax credits for investments in renewable energy.
After 45 years as a loyal Republican leader, Senator Specter can change his registration, but not his record. Without Joe Sestak's leadership to follow, Arlen Specter leaves little doubt that he will side with the gas companies over protecting our environment, and foreign oil over a new American green energy economy.
