Thomas Silvestri elected chairman of American Press Institute

API announces new officers and directors


RESTON, Va. – Thomas A. Silvestri was elected chairman of the American Press Institute at the organizations board of directors meeting, held here Nov. 9-10. The gavel was passed to Silvestri from outgoing Chairman Mark Contreras, senior vice president/newspapers for The E.W. Scripps Co., who was honored with the API Lifetime Service Award.

Silvestri is publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He has also served as president of Media General Inc.s community newspaper division, Media General director of news synergy, deputy managing editor and senior editor for business news of the Times-Dispatch, and as a reporter and editor for Gannett Westchester (N.Y.) Newspapers.

“Although the leadership that Mark Contreras provided as chairman of API will be impossible to replace, we are delighted to welcome Tom Silvestri to the position,” said API President and Executive Director Drew Davis. “Toms enthusiasm and innovative spirit will help ensure that API remains positioned to provide leadership development, create actionable knowledge on relevant issues and serve as a forum for industry collaboration.”

Other officers elected during the meeting were: Robert J. Weil, vice president/operations of The McClatchy Co. (Sacramento, Calif.), as vice chairman; and Charles V. Pittman, senior vice president/newspapers for Schurz Communications (South Bend, Ind.), as treasurer.

New members of the board of directors are: Mark E. Aldam, senior vice president of Hearst Newspapers (New York); David H. Black, president of Black Press Ltd. (Victoria, British Columbia); Michael A. Gugliotto, president of Pioneer Newspapers (Seattle); Michelle Krans, senior vice president/strategy and development, U.S. Community Publishing for Gannett Co. Inc. (McLean, Va.); James Moroney III, publisher and CEO of The Dallas Morning News; and Katharine Weymouth, chief executive officer of Washington Post Media and publisher of The Washington Post.

Directors elected to additional three-year terms were: Caroline Diamond Harrison, publisher of Staten Island (N.Y.) Advance; Caroline Little, CEO North American for Guardian News & Media; and Joseph Lodovic, president of MediaNews Group Inc. (Denver).

Davis expressed his appreciation for the service of outgoing board members: Contreras; P. Steven Ainsley, publisher of The Boston Globe; Donna J. Barrett, president and CEO of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. (Birmingham, Ala.); and Peter A. Horvitz, chairman, president and CEO of Horvitz Newspapers Inc. (Bellevue, Wash.).
