Keeping the Tradition: Sts Anargyroi Church, Greenport Thanksgiving Dinners

Keeping the Tradition: Sts Anargyroi Church, Greenport Thanksgiving Dinners

By Catherine Tsounis

During the past twelve years, Rev. Father Gerasimos and Presvitera Kyriaki Ballas, the Ladies Philoptohos and members of Sts. Anargyroi, Taxiarchi and Gerasimos Church of Greenport have filled Thanksgiving baskets for members of their East end Long island community. On Saturday, November 20th, twenty one baskets with a turkey, twenty-seven food trimmings and coffee filled baskets. Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell participated in the event. He aided all recipients in transporting turkey baskets to their cars. In this time of economic distress, the community is keeping the tradition of philanthropy alive in this rural town.

The canned foods were raised by church members from October in a box placed at the narthex of the church. The turkeys were donated by Peter Fakiris. Nick Kadopodis, owner of North shore farms in Port Washington and Glen Cove donated a significant amount of the basket foods. The enthusiasm and drive of Rev. Gerasimos and Presvitera Kyriaki Ballas has motivated all in this unique holiday tradition. For more information, call Father Gerasimos of Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis and Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church at (631) 477-1801.
