Leading Association of Greek Americans Donates $10,000 to Fairfax County Urban Search & Rescue Team

Leading Association of Greek Americans Donates
$10,000 to Fairfax County Urban Search & Rescue Team

ALEXANDRIA, VA - The leading membership-based association for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and countless Philhellenes, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), today donated $10,000 to the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, announced National President Nicholas A. Karacostas. The check presentation occurred at the Fairfax (Franconia) Fire Station #5, Alexandria, Va.

The USAR Team, or VA Task Force #1, is a domestic and international disaster response resource sponsored by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. The USAR team representative, Battalion Deputy Chief for Special Operations John Burke, accepted the donation along with several of his colleagues.

"The Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team is an invaluable resource that helps to rescue the lives of countless individuals across the globe, most recently in Haiti," Karacostas said. "We are indebted to their service and sacrifice at the request of our nation, which is often at a moment's notice. As a service-oriented organization, and in keeping with AHEPA's mission which promotes philanthropy and civic duty, we proudly present this donation on behalf of a grateful Greek American community."

The funds were raised through the collective efforts of the AHEPA Family, including the Daughters of Penelope.
