Pennsylvania Food Merchants Praise Sen. Santorum Pennsylvania Food Merchants Praise Sen. Santorum
For Introducing Voluntary Country of Origin Labeling Bill
Measure Would Enable Local Producers to Promote ‘Made in Pennsylvania’ Products
(CAMP HILL, PENNSYLVANIA) - June 23, 2005 - Pennsylvania food retailers praised Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) for introducing voluntary country of origin labeling legislation today. “This bill, the Food Promotion Act of 2005, will give Pennsylvania consumers and producers a cost-effective labeling program for meat, produce and fish that works,” said Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association President and CEO David McCorkle.
The measure would replace the mandatory labeling law, which has been widely criticized as too costly and requiring too much paperwork. It will cost billions of dollars to implement, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture and industry estimates.
“The Santorum bill would minimize record-keeping so we can focus on promoting U.S. products - the main purpose of the labeling program - instead of pushing paper,” McCorkle said.
The legislation also builds on successful and proven marketing programs, such as Pennsylvania’s Simply Delicious initiative for produce. Food bearing labels from recognized state marketing programs would satisfy the labeling requirement.
“We can promote Pennsylvania products and support the state economy with this flexibility,” McCorkle said. “The Santorum bill will save consumers and the food industry millions of dollars by using existing labeling and record-keeping programs and a market-driven, voluntary approach.”
The Santorum measure is identical to one authored last year by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and passed by that panel. Goodlatte is expected to reintroduce his legislation in the near future.
