BOOKS: The Legacy

BOOKS: The Legacy
Posted on Thursday, December 01 @ 14:41:51 CST by TGA News.com

ATHENS.- Ellinika Grammata Publications will soon release The Legacy, an insightful book that focuses on Archbishop Spyridon’s ministry in the Greek Orthodox Church of America and examines the aftermath of Spyridon’s archiepiscopal tenure in a deluxe bilingual edition bearing the signature of his biographer, the writer and journalist Justine Frangouli-Argyris.

The cover of the book "Ôhe Legacy"
The Legacy assesses the works and days of Archbishop Spyridon during his three-year ministry at the helm of the Greek Orthodox Church of America (1996-1999). Reading his addresses, encyclicals and other documents, one is struck by the realistic goals he set in response to the critical challenge of ensuring the survival of Orthodoxy and Hellenism in the vast melting pot that is the United States.

In her latest work, Justine Frangouli-Argyris brings to light Archbishop Spyridon’s efforts regarding the major questions of Orthodoxy, Greek education, and the lobby on Greek national issues as well as the governance of the Archdiocese of America. At the same time, she depicts the protagonists of the crisis in the Church of America and reveals how the realization of Archbishop Spyridon’s great vision for the Greek American community was systematically thwarted.

This documentary book discusses many aspects of the contemporary history of the Archdiocese of America: people in the backrooms of power vying for financial control over the highly prosperous and largest eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne, the phenomena of plutocracy and nepotism in the current administration as well as the clear signs of decline from 1999 onward.

Biographical Profile of the Author
Justine Frangouli-Argyris was born in 1959 on the Greek island of Lefkada, where she completed her primary and secondary education. A graduate of the University of Athens Law School's Political Science Department, Frangouli-Argyris has been a contributor to radio, television, magazines and daily newspapers in Greece since 1983.

She is a member of the Union of Journalists for Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) and has periodically worked for major radio stations such as ERA, SKY, FLASH 9.61, and Athens Municipality Radio 9.84 and for Greek state television (ET).

Since 1989, Justine Frangouli-Argyris has been living and working in Montreal, Canada as a correspondent for the Athens News Agency (ANA) as well as for the Eleftherotypia and Ethnos newspapers. She also works for American and local Greek-Canadian media.

She is married to businessman Theodore Argyris and is the mother of 15-year old Alexander.

She wrote “The Lonely Path of Integrity” (Exandas Publishers 2000), the authorized biography of Spyridon, former Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church of America.

She also authored a novel entitled “Petaei, Petaei to Synnefo” (Clouds Fly, Don't They?), (Psychogios Publications 2003), and “Shopping Around the World: Unbeatable Bargains and Bite-Sized Stories”, a shopping guide spiced with short stories, (Ellinika Grammata 2004).

Her current work “The Legacy”, H Parakatathiki (Ellinika Grammata 2005 is a bilingual edition including selected speeches and revealing writings by former Archbishop Spyridon with a detailed account of developments in the Archdiocese from 1999 to the present.
