The Mixed Chorus of Nafpaktos, Greece is coming to our region in late October.

Special to HELLENIC NEWS OF AMERICA
August 2007

The Mixed Chorus of Nafpaktos, Greece is coming to our region in late October. It will be their very first American concert tour. For 20 years the Mixed Chorus has performed in concert halls and festivals throughout Greece and Europe, receiving awards in many choral competitions.

The first performance of the Mixed Chorus of Nafpaktos will be on Saturday, October 27th at 7:00 PM in the Main Building Auditorium of Drexel University, 32nd & Chestnut Streets, Philadelphia.

The second performance of the 45-voiced Chorus will be on Sunday, October 28th at 3:30 PM in Harrisburg at The Forum, 5th and Walnut Streets in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex.

A third performance is being planned for Tuesday, October 30th at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 150-05 12th Avenue, Whitestone, New York.

Each 90-minute Concert program will feature works by Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, and Vasilios Tsitsanis as well as selections of ?Rembetika? and traditional Greek folk songs. A variety of musical instruments will be played to accompany the Chorus, including bouzouki, kithara, accordion and piano.

Artistic & Music Director Todor Kabakchiev will conduct the Chorus, as he has since 1994. Pianist Zizi Korkonzelou will accompany the Chorus and perform a solo as well.

General Admission for the 90-minute Concert -- plus a fine Reception following the Concert,--is $20 for Adults and $10 for Students. Profits from these concerts will benefit various Greek charities.

The American concerts are being presented with the official approval ( ) __of the renowned Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis. Since 2001, the Mixed Chorus of Nafpaktos has staged the CHORUS FESTIVAL ? MIKIS THEODORAKIS in the City of Nafpaktos. The biennial Festival is a tribute to the composer, now 82 years old, whose lifes work includes symphonies, chamber music, cantatas and oratorios, hymns, ballets, operas, and songs and song cycles. Additionally, Theodorakis is internationally famous for his film scores, including the musical scores of ?Zorba the Greek?, ?Z?, and ?Serpico?. During the American concerts, the Chorus will perform the Theodorakis composition they will have performed during the 2007 Theodorakis Festival, October 12 - 14, 2007 - less than two weeks prior to their American tour!

Ted N. Skiadas of Coatesville, PA heads the Mixed Chorus of Nafpaktos Concert Planning Committee. Ted is a native of the Nafpaktos region and has spent much time in this colorful City-by-the-Sea. A chance meeting with Maestro Kabakchiev in a Nafpaktian coffee shop last year was the inspiration for this First American tour. For many months, Ted and his Planning Committee ? HELLENIC NEWS OF AMERICA Publisher/Editor Pavlos J. Kotrotsios, Dr. Peter C. Patukas, and Peter N. Skiadas ? have been working long and hard, sorting out the myriad details and organizing Subcommittees all around the Philadelphia and Harrisburg regions.

The Nafpaktos Concert Planning Committee and Subcommittees are pictured here as they plan the Concerts, the Receptions, and the printed Commemorative Program. Plus housing for the Chorus members, tours of Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City, Harrisburg ? and on and on The work that remains to be done is considerable, but be assured that it will all come together on October 27th at Drexel University in Philadelphia ? and on October 28th at The Forum in Harrisburg. We hope you and your families and friends will plan to attend one - or both - of these memorable concerts. All profits will be donated to various Greek charities.
