AHEPA 95 GREEK CONCERT FOR THE BENEFIT OF ODYSSEY CHARTER SCHOOL A HUGE SUCCESS

On Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2008, close to 300 people gathered to the Baby Grant Theater in Wilmington, DE, to be entertained by the performers Kostis Kritsotakis, Dimitris Marinos and the Children Chorus of the Odyssey Charter School. Kostis is the talented piano player and Music Teacher from Greece at Odyssey; and Dimitris Marinos is a star mandolin bouzouki and vocal performer from Greece in Chicago.

The 2 -hour program was delightful and contained variety music and songs of interest to all. The audience was moved with Cantades from the Ionian Islands to the more familiar music of Hadjidakis, Theodorakis, Loizos, Xarhakos, Vamvakaris, and songs from the poetry of Ritsos, Elytis, Ritsos , etc.

As outstanding and pleasant as the program was, the children Chorus from the Odyssey Charter School really stole the show. The 25-children chorus, mostly second and third graders without any Hellenic background, sang with confidence and almost native profora songs like O Psaras, Thourios, Tis Dikaiosynes Elie Noete, Varka sto Yialo, Ta Paedia tou Peiraia and other such songs. Their confidence and expressions gave an indication as to what can be done, only if we want to do things and are willing to put the needed energy into such projects and schools.

Congratulations to the AHEPA organizers of the event under the leadership of Dimitri Dandolos and his team; also, our hearty congratulations to the music teacher Kostis Kritsotakis; and above all to the children and their parents. The Odyssey School, under the leadership of the Principal Anthony Skoutelas and its Board, seems to be on its way to become an example of what primary school education should be. Genoito !!
