October 6, 2008 – With distinct honour and pleasure, the University of Patras announces the validation of its educational and research collaboration with John Hopkins University School of Medicine, which together with the Harvard Medical School, firmly constitutes the best Medical Schools worldwide. The collaborative Agreement (MOU) between the two institutions was officially signed on the 11th April 2008, in Baltimore, MD, United States, by a delegation of professors led by Dr. Dimitrios Dougenis, Vice-Rector of the University of Patras.

Liatsis, Director and Executive Hospital Manager, and Professor F. Kalfarentzos, Dean of the Medical School, will welcome our visitors at the main hospital auditorium and subsequently, the main reception ceremony will take place at Great University Hall. A pre-event local press conference will be held in Patras on Thursday, October 9 at 12.00pm at the main press hall in the city of Patras and a second one will take place after the main ceremony at the Patras University, on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at 2.00 pm
On Thursday, October 16, 2008, the collaborative educational curriculum between the two University Institutions will be presented to political, education and research authorities at a special presentation ceremony scheduled at the “Kostis Palamas” Hall, cultural centre of the University of Athens.
The ceremony will include brief talks by S. Koubias, Professor and Rector of UPatras; D. Dougenis, Professor and Vice Rector of UPatras, F. Kalfarentzos, Professor of Surgery,
Dean of the Medical School; C. Gogos, Professor of Internal Medicine, Vice Dean of the Medical School, University of Patras; Greetings by Minister of Health and Social Solidarity Dimitris Avramopoulos, Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Euripides Stilianidis, Minister of Development Christos Folias; Dr. Myron L. "This is a tremendous opportunity and great honour for John Hopkins School of Medicine to share new ideas with such an outstanding University as that of Patras," said Professor Myron L. Weisfeldt during the signing of the collaborative Agreement, pointing out that "…we're expecting a fruitful and productive collaboration for Hopkins as well as for Patras".
The Memorandum of Understanding specifies six objectives comprised of an exchange of faculty, students and staff; brief visits of teaching, scientific and research staff related to specific studies and lectures; development of undergraduate and postgraduate student training; administrative staff exchanges geared to evaluation and improvement of curriculum; initiation of joint research programs in areas of mutual interest; and cooperation in cultural and athletic events.
The main Scientific and Research disciplines included in the Agreement are:
1. Neurosciences and Brain Imaging
2. Clinical Immunology / Allergy
3. Public Health
4. Bioengineering – Biomedicine
5. Imaging in Cardiology (non invasive coronary angiography, study of heart function by CTA 320/MRI)
6. Research Methodology / Biostatistics
7. Biological indicators and genetic approach to neuropsychiatric diseases
This collaboration, which is of particular importance for our University, was based upon its very good reputation and international recognition, as well as on the research clinical and teaching ability and experience of the academic staff of our Medical School. Furthermore, this agreement represents a great opportunity for our scientific personnel, undergraduate and postgraduate students to come in touch with one of the worlds top universities.
We hope that the collaboration curriculum, which beyond Medicine and related disciplines generally covers the fields of Bioengineering and Biomechanics, will gradually expand to other scientific fields covering wide-ranging disciplines taught at the University of Patras.
The University of Patras, beyond the relevant Ministries of Education, Health and Development, appeals to all those who could contribute to the success of this cooperation, since our main aim has always been the promotion and improvement of fundamental and advanced research in Health Sciences, as well as constantly upgrading the Health Services offered to patients in Western Greece and the Peloponnese region.
On behalf of the University of Patras,
Dimitrios Dougenis
Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vice-Rector
